May 9, 2007  Start saving gas and money.

How long will you need to drive that new car to save enough to pay the difference? New cars get better mileage and so a tank of gas last longer. Your older car gets less gas mileage, but it is paid for. Assume that your car gets about 18 mpg and gas cost $ 3.00 per gallon. If you drive 15,000 miles a year, it will cost you $ 2499.99 for gas to drive that 15,000 miles. If you trade in your old car for a new car that gets about 23 mpg, the same 15,000 miles will cost you $ 1956.51 for gas. That is roughly $ 543.48 savings. Now lets look at what the car will cost you.

New car dealers will give you 0% financing for 60 months. If your car cost $ 20,000 to buy, that would cost you about $ 333.33 plus tax, license, and insurance each month. Because your new car is worth more, your insurance and license plates are higher. You have spent $ 20,000. to save $ 545.00 per year on gas, and you probably paid that extra $ 550.00 on license plates and insurance each year.

Lets look at another way we could have saved money on gas. For 35 to 40 years, motorists have saved 10% or more on gas by using synthetic motor oil in their engine. Synthetic oil will fight friction and heat, allowing your motor parts to move more freely, reducing the drag that keeps you from getting better gas mileage. With less drag in your engine, you experience better gas mileage. Motorists using Amsoil synthetic oil have experienced savings of 10% or more on gas costs.

Let us assume that your old car that got 18 mpg, was switched to Amsoil synthetic oil. Instead of 18 miles per gallon, you would now get about 19.8 miles per gallon, assuming you get the average 10% fuel improvement by switching to Amsoil synthetic oil. Now the 15,000 miles would cost you $ 2272.74 for gas to drive 15,000 miles in a whole year. You will need to use 6 quarts of oil during the year, and 2 oil filters. 6 quarts of Amsoil 5w30 synthetic motor oil, which can be ran for up to 25,000 miles per year under normal operating conditions, would cost you about $ 43.50 and the 2 oil filters would cost about $ 17.00 each, for a cost of $ 34.00 for filters for the year. It has cost you about $ 77.50 to improve the mileage of your older car that was already paid for. By using the Amsoil synthetic oil, and the 2 oil filters that were changed every 6 months or at least every 12,500 miles, you have saved $ 227.25 in 15,000 miles, less the cost of the Amsoil synthetic oil of $ 77.50 for a savings of $ 149.75 a year. When you consider the 5 years it would take to pay for that new car, you will have saved the cost of the new car and $ 748.75 on gas, assuming the gas stays $ 3.00 per gallon, which I would not take that bet.
